Westman islands: Vacations and Tourism

A group of 15-18 islands, they were formed by submarine volcanic eruptions along a 30 km long fissure lying southwest to northeast.
The main island is Heimaey where about 5.000 people live.

The largest island is Heimaey, 13.4 Km2.
Most of the islands have vertical sea cliffs and are well vegetated.
Hunting and fishing are the traditional custom of Westman islands and that’s the reason why there are a multiplication of boat in the area of the port.

It’s famous for bird hunting and egg collecting; you can get there by air and by sea.

You can eat every sort of appetizing dish in local restaurants; fish is the typical food of Westman islands, but you can also find any kind of international cuisine.

Considering its geographical position, climate is much milder than might be expected, especially in winter. The weather is on the whole quite changeable and depends mostly on the tracks of the atmospheric depressions crossing the North Atlantic. Coastal areas in Iceland tend to be windy, gales are common, especially in winter, while thunderstorms are extremely rare.
