At present, the Athenry Castle built in 1235 and the Dominican Abbey founded in 1241, which later became a university, are both national monuments. This town was at one time the chief burial place of the Earls of Ulster and other principal families from the adjoining territories.
Athenry today is a classic example of a medieval town enclosed within walls. The medieval castle, Dominican Priory, the Market Cross and the medieval street plan are all testimony to this fact. The Athenry Town Walls are regarded as the finest in Ireland.
Athenry has a history of excellence in sports and boasts of many successful sporting clubs. It has one of the most successful Gaelic hurling teams and also a strong athletics history.
The mass parade on St. Patrick’s Day (17 March) is an important event in County Galway. For music aficionados, there is the Galway Early Music Festival in May, showcasing creations from the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods.
