Abbeyleix, in the Republic of Ireland, is a heritage town located near the River Nore in County Laois. It is centrally located and is only a one-hour drive from the capital city of Dublin.
The Gulf Stream influences the climate of the whole of Ireland to a large extent. Abbeyleix is prone to violent west winds with varying degrees of cloudiness and precipitation. Summer is the ideal time for visits.
Established as an estate town in the eighteenth century by the second Viscount de Vesci, Abbeyleix attracts a significant number of tourists interested in the historical structures that abound in the region.
Today, the major occupations in this town of 3,700 inhabitants are agriculture and dairy farming. Low income being a problem, there are several rural employment partnership schemes and initiatives to help the farmer.
