Abbeyleix has an Old World charm to it, with tree-lined streets, a Georgian market house, ring forts, colonial estate houses and a broad main street. Fishing along the River Nore and garden walks, especially from the grounds of St. Michael and All Angels Church of Ireland (The Lords Walk), are popular pastimes.
The town also has an 18-hole golf course and is home to Ireland’s largest Polo Club. It houses several pubs and bars, including the world-famous Morrissey’s, one of the oldest in Ireland.
There is also a Heritage House, which once housed a Patrician Monastery and a boys’ school. The tomb of the last High King of Laois, Malachi O’More, is situated in the grounds of Abbeyleix Demesne.
Abbeyleix hosts several annual events and festivals throughout the year, such as the Slieve Bloom Walking Club Festival and the Annual International Irish Music and Set Dancing in May as well as the Gordon Bennett Vintage Car Rally in June.
