Athenry (meaning ‘The King’s Ford’) is an agricultural town in County Galway in the Republic of Ireland. It lies on the Galway–Dublin main line of the Irish railway network. The town is popular in a famous song, The Fields of Athenry.
Though it has a mild oceanic climate, it is prone to violent winds, as a result of the depression brought in by the Gulf Stream. The most ideal time to visit is in summers (March–September), since most of the music and art festivals are held during this period. However, holidaying here during off-season is not such a bad idea, considering the better bargains, if only one can withstand some rain.
With a population of a little more than 5,000 people, the major sources of income for this town are agriculture-based activities such as cultivation of potatoes, wheat, rearing of dairy goats and poultry.
