Clifden is a busy market town with a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. Here, one can indulge in activities like deep sea-fishing, nature walking, golfing, or spend time listening to music in the pubs during the evenings.
One can visit the Connemara National Park, the famous championship links Golf Club, the Alcock and Brown landing site and the Marconi site. Boat tours to the longest fjord in Ireland take place several times in a day.
There are several events and festivities all year round and perhaps the most popular of them is the Clifden Pony Show that has been conducted in the third week of August since 1924. Then there is the Clifden Community Arts Week in September with a host of concerts, poetry reading, lectures, recitals and traditional music. The Omey Island Races is a horse-racing event on the beach and the Clifden Regatta is a boat sailing competition organized by the Clifden Boat Club.
