The town of Cobh (formerly known as Queenstown) is situated on the largest of the three islands in Cork harbour on the south coast of the Republic of Ireland.
It is linked to the mainland by road and rail bridges.
Cobh is a pleasant seaside town; with about 7,500 inhabitants. It lies on the steep slopes of a hill, overlooking the harbour, which naturally protected and deep enough to cater for the largest of ships.
It was a port of call for the great transatlantic liners until 1950s.
