Originally built in 1855, the Cork Opera House is a distinct city landmark and theater.  Although it’s faced a few rough patches in its history, including damage by Irish rebels in 1920, it has been in existence for over 250 years yet it wasn’t properly rebuilt and open until 1963.

The Opera received a much needed facelift and grand scale renovation in 2003 to both the façade of the building and the surrounding Emmet Square.  Originally built for “the promotion of science, literature and the fine arts, along with the diffusion of architectural knowledge,” the Opera House has put on performances of all types and genres.  Known as “The Op” to Cork locals, it is also a popular hang-out area for skating boarding teenagers.  In addition, the Half Moon Theater lies to the rear of the Opera House.
