Dalkey is a town in the county of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, about eight miles south-east of Dublin, the capital of Ireland. It has a mild climate, with high rainfall and occasional extremities making it an ideal summer resort.
This heritage town named after the offshore Dalkey Island was founded as a Viking settlement and later gained importance as a sea-port during the Middle Ages.
With a population of a little above 8,400 inhabitants, this town is one of the wealthier and prettier parts of Dublin and is home to some popular personalities like U2 band member David Evans and F1 racer Eddie Irvine. Famous playwright George Bernard Shaw spent his childhood here.
Being mostly a residential and tourist area, it has no major income-generating industries. The people go to the city or south, to Bray, for work.
