Officially, it’s called the John F. Kennedy Memorial Park, but the locals will still call it Eyre Square. An inner-city public park located in the heart of Galway city center, it is a rectangular shaped park nearby the adjoining shopping area of Williams Street and Shop Street.
The park’s origins date back from 1631 with several statues and attractions. A statue of the Irish writer Padraic O Conaire stands since 1935 as well as a memorial portrait dedicated to John F. Kennedy, who famously visited the city during his presidential term. It is also home to many local student and political protests and where locals flock during the afternoon hours during their lunch, during permitting weather.
When you first arrive to Galway, Eyre Square is probably the first thing you will see, as the bus station operates on the North side of the park and the train station is only about a block away.
