Londonderry is best explored on foot or in an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage which winds through the streets of the old town. Walls circle the entire old town and a walk on the parapets is the best way to catch all the sights. The Guild Hall, with its gigantic clock and stained glass depicting the history of the city; the Gothic-styled St.Eugene’s Cathedral is distinguished by its sandstone structure and stain glass windows; and the Cathedral of St.Columb, which houses different artefacts witness to the city’s past, are worth visiting.
The Workhouse Museum and Library, which depicts the history of the region, and the Tower Museum, which takes the visitor through the town’s development over the years, are the best museums in the city.
The Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival is one of the best of its kind in Ireland. Almost 40,000 partygoers, dressed in their scariest outfits, take over the streets in one huge street party.
