While most of the local residents head south to the sunny beaches of Mallorca or Malaga (let’s face it, Ireland just doesn’t have the weather) there are a few sandy beaches in the Tralee area that are worth visiting (but just don’t expect to work on your tan or take a dip in the ocean!).
The Fenit Blue Flag Beach is a top pick, and located next to the harbor in the little fishing village of Fenit (and only a short walk from Tralee’s town center). The beach is a designated natural heritage area, with notable flora and fauna and is famous for its Rose of Tralee Festival every August. You can check out the big ships coming in and out of the harbor or visit the nearby aquarium, Tralee Ocean World.
If you are looking to head out a little further from Tralee, then try Banna Beach, located about seven kilometers from town. This beautiful beach is a great place to relax and get away, with clean waters and soft, white sands. The dunes at Banna are protected and are a designated area of conservation, with loads of rare plants and animals in the area, making it a perfect visit for the wildlife enthusiast.
