When you think Ireland, you don’t necessarily think sunny days and beachside resorts, the country does have some of the most stunning beach and ocean views north of Spain.
County Mayo’s beaches remain unique as one of Europe’s most unspoiled regions in environmental terms and has a variety of beautiful, safe sandy beaches all within a short driving distance from the town’s city center. It is also one of the few regions in Europe that have the same quality of Mayo’s beaches, which boasts 13 Blue Flag awards.
Some of the most notable beaches in the area are on the North and South shores of Clew Bay and in the direction of Louisburgh and to the north. Local winners with Westport residents and out-of-town tourists include Bertha, near Murrisk, Old Head and Carramore in Louisburgh, which see very little crowds and are excellent choices for family outings and day trips outside of the city. Other top grade beaches in the area include Ross Strand in Killala, Mullaghroe and Elly Bay Beaches in Belmullet and Clare Island.
