Alghero is situated in Sardinia, an island off the west coast of Italy. Alghero is not as commercially exploited as other Italian towns and thus retains a lot of its Old World charm and authenticity.
The climate in Alghero is the Mediterranean type. Summers can get very hot with temperatures in August touching 30°C. Winters are mild, but Alghero sees a fair bit of rainfall as it is along the coast.
Alghero prospered after the medieval period due to the king’s patronage; natural calamities and war, over the years, pulled it back for a while. Today, this town of approximately 40,000 inhabitants is a quite seaside resort.
While the modern part of the town thrives on coral jewellery and the few tourists; in the old fortifications, one can still find herdsmen tending to their sheep.
