The Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church is a shrine built to honor the priest and mystic Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. It centers round the tomb built to house the holy man’s last remnants after his death in 1968. He was declared a saint in 2002. The shrine is inside the Church of Our Lady of Grace (Santa Maria delle Grazie).
To commemorate the priest’s 40th death anniversary, his body was exhumed and put on display in a crypt near his tomb. It has since then drawn hundreds of visitors from around the world.
The church is an architectural marvel and was designed by the Genoan architect, Renzo Piano. It can seat around 6500 people while worshipping and nearly 30000 standing out. The shrine also contains the Way of the Cross nested in the hillside above.
