The sanctuary is a Roman Catholic shrine which is said to have been consecrated by the Archangel Michael himself who is said to have appeared in 462, 490 and 1656. It has since then been a place of pilgrimage for millions of catholic around the world. In 1987, the Pope John Paul II visited the shrine.
It is located in the hills of Gargono promontory and although unassuming in appearance in the exterior the steps to the church lead to the main church with areas decorated by frescos and breathtaking sculptures.
