The Sassi in Matera, Italy are ancient caverns dug into the Tufo rocks.
The unusual antique caves of Sassi originated from a prehistoric settlement, the Troglodyte. The populace resided in the caves in extremely poor conditions, owing to which the government relocated the people to the modern areas. Since, the Sassi were deserted.
However, in the last few years, the state has promoted the regeneration of the Sassi which has helped it in becoming a major tourist attraction of the city.
Guided tours of the Sassi exhibit the interiors of the olden houses and throw light on the lifestyle of the people. These attractive rock-cut houses are developed for tourism and mirror the culture of the entire region.
Set in an ancient and picturesque landscape, the Sassi and nearby areas have also been featured in various movies as ancient Jerusalem.Web Site: http://whc.unesco.org/pg.cfm?cid=31&id_site=670
