Reggio Emilia: Attractions and more...

There are many religious buildings in the city. The Baroque Basilica della Ghiara built in 1597 is the most important church of the city. Then there is the Basilica di San Prospero which was built in the 10th century and which was dedicated to Prosper of Reggio, a bishop in Reggio.

There is the Cathedral which was built in the 9th and 12th century. It was reconstructed in the second half of the 16th century and has 3 naves with some of the known architectural works.

The church of St. Augustine is another must see place. Once this was named as St. Apollinare and its name changed in 1268 when it was rebuilt along with the annexed convent. It got restored in 1452 when the tower was edificated.

There are also palaces and such historic buildings which are worth visiting like the Bishop’s Palace, the Palazzo Cassoli, Palazzo Ducale built in the 18th century. There are also painters and sculptors like Oreste Carpi which are displayed in the museums.
