The Necropolis of Isola Sacra, a site that used to serve as a burial ground 2000 years ago, and the Port and Trajan Lake, a dockyard which was built around the same time and could accommodate more than 200 ships, are the prime attractions in this area. The Ship Museum displays a range of artefacts, boats and fishing equipment found during architectural digs in the surrounding areas.
The excavations of Ostia Antica, located in the vicinity, are spread over a huge area and date back to the ancient Roman times. The noteworthy structures in this area are an ancient fire-fighting station and an open-air theatre which could easily hold a few thousand spectators. But the most interesting structure is the Domus dei Dioscuri, a mansion with beautiful mosaic work on its floors and walls.
Fiumicino is also known for its famous seafood restaurants which are even popular with the inhabitants of Rome.
