Piazza Unità d'Italia is the main square of Trieste. It is located at the foot of the hill of San Giusto, between the Village Teresian Giuseppino.
The square opens on one side of the Gulf of Trieste and is surrounded by numerous palaces and public buildings. This rectangular area is the largest square in Europe, which faces the sea (a few squares directly overlooking the sea, another well-known is the square of Commerce in Lisbon).
The square is now home to the Municipality of Trieste, the Palazzo della Giunta Regionale del Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the prefecture of the capital.
