Welcome to our tour of the Vatican Museums, the main attraction in Vatican City, one of the smallest independent states on earth.
Our tour starts from the Cortile della Pigna and the Belevedere Pavilion, where you can have an interesting view of Rome. Then we'll see the first statue that started the Vatican collection, the Apollo, along with other famous sculptures like the Lacoonte.
We enter the Gallery of the Candelabra, with a marble floor, columns, archeological artefacts from an ancient Imperial building and part of collection of sculptures from the Rome of the Emperors. Then there's the Gallery of the Tapestries, whose were cartooms made by Raphael's pupils, followed by the Gallery of the Geographic Maps, representing Italy as it used to be in the 16th Century.
We proceed toward the Stanza di Raffaello. The apartments of Pope Julius II were painted by Raphael between the years 1508 and 1520.
Finally we enter the Sistine Chapel with the famous Ceiling frescoed by Michelangelo. The whole Chapel is an extraordinary and unique masterpiece of art and there we have the history of the human salvation.
We leave the Chapel to enter the Basilica of St. Peter, the most impressive church of Christendom with Michelangelo's dome, enriched by works of art made by well known artists, among them the Pietà, by Michelangelo, and the largest bronze sculpture in the world on top of the papal altar.
After leaving the Basilica there's time to see the Sistin Chapel from the outside and the point where the smoke comes out after the election of the new pope.
