Bergamo town is a commune in Lombardy, Italy, around forty kilometers to the northeast of Milan. The city is a well-known place in the history of music, with the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maggiore having a well documented tradition of teaching music and singing for over 800 years.
Main sights are the upper city ("Città Alta"), a hilltop medieval town amidst 17th century cyclopic defensive walls and the lower city ("Città bassa"). The upper city has many places of interest like the Citadel, the old square, the Palazzo della Ragione and the Palazzo Nuovo. On the other hand, the lower city is home to sites like Pinacoteca dell'Accademia Carrara and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea as well as the city's major shopping streets.
This town is also the hometown of the Bergamo Lions American football team, who are one of the topmost successful European Football League in history, having won multiple titles.
