Oristano, a town which is the capital of Oristano province, is located in Italy. The city, which is a commune in Sardinia, is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oristano. The city has a total population of around 32,000 inhabitants.
The town experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and cool winters with light rain showers.
Founded next to the ancient city of Othoca, Oristano gained importance as a city in 1070 when an archbishop, Torcotorio, moved the bishopric seat from Tharros to the city. During the middle ages, the city was on constant warring terms with several Sardinian kingdoms.
Traditional pottery making is widely practised. The economy of the city is largely based on its fishing and tourism industries. Agriculture is widely practised throughout the city.
