The best way to get around the island is on a moped. The Town of Pantelleria is the main town and the island’s only harbour; several villages are scattered around the island. The harbour is the hub of the town and is characterised by Castello Barbacane, fortifications built in the Roman period. There is a Neolithic village with tombs made of lava rocks.
The Grotta do Satana is made of several lakes of warm water due to the hot springs running into it. Nika, a fishing village, also has many natural springs and gardens as well as houses preserved from the medieval town. The harbour of Gadir is well known for the Lago delle Ondine, a still lake surrounded by towering cliffs.
The Specchio di Venere is a lake in the crater of an old volcano. The Grotta Benikula and the Grotta dei Briganti are caves outside the village of Siba which serve as natural sauna baths. Several caves and inlets are popularly used for swimming but are best accessed by small boats.
