With about 75.000 inhabitants, Asti is Monferrato major centre and Asti province capital, in Piedmont.
Apart from a modern recent area, the city is a historic centre, especially downtown where some important medieval buildings and monuments can be admired, as well as romanic and gothic masterpieces.
These sightseeings show the ancient roots of Asti, which was a Roman territory, then conquered by Frederick Barbarossa and later the Sforza family.
In Asti you can't miss the Santa Maria Assunta e San Gottardo Cathedral, which is considered as one of the most important Gothic masterpieces in Piedmont.
Another important church is San Secondo church, which shows visible influences of the Romanic and Gothic art.
In Corso Vittorio Alfieri you can dmire several important buildings: Comentina Tower, Bellino Palace, with a great museum, Regibus Tower and the Red Tower, and finally Alfieri Palace, in Alfieri square, dedicated to the famous poet.
