Pompei is situated in the vicinity of Naples in the south-western part of Italy. The city is home to approximately 25,000 inhabitants. Pompei’s claim to fame is the ruined ancient city of Pompeii, at its outskirts.
A good time to visit is winter which is quite mild in this region. The weather is at its best in spring and autumn, but it can get very crowded. Summer temperatures escalate in July and August.
Pompeii was a lively city, rich in arts and culture and flourishing commercially. Little less than 2,000 years ago, Mt. Vesuvius erupted and set the entire city afire; ash and soil covered everything and solidified it with time.
It was rediscovered in the eighteenth century, and since, it has become an excavation site of great interest. Today, it is visited by over 2 million tourists every year.
