The ruins of Pompeii are on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list. A walk through the ruins displays life of the Romans as it would have been in the first century. The House of the Vettii, one of the biggest mansions with beautiful murals, the House of the Mysteries, displaying some unique frescoes, and the House of the Faun, containing an impressive bronze statue, are the town’s most important buildings.
The citizens of Pompeii had two main venues for entertainment, the Amphitheatre, venue for gladiator battles and other competitions, and the thermal Bathhouse, displaying some vivid frescoes. The casts of the victims found during excavation have been filled with plaster to preserve them, and some of these are displayed in Garden of the Fugitives.
The National Museum of Naples houses most of the discoveries made during the excavations. Herculaneum is a smaller excavation site in the vicinity, bearing a history quite similar to that of Pompeii.
