You may feel like if you’ve seen one church, you’ve seen them all - and for many parts of the world, that’s true. But the Basilica of San Saturnino in Cagliari is one of those rare examples of a site that is not only worth visiting in and of itself - doing so gives you a complete history of the area, in just one place.
Consider these layers of history: It’s a church that was made a basilica in the 12th century, even though it was built in the 4th-6th century AD, on top of the tomb of Saint Saturnin, who was martyred in the 3rd century AD, which rests atop Roman necropolis that goes back to the earliest years of the Christian era.
