Rome wasn’t built in a day… and neither was the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari, Sardinia.  Construction of this massive and beautiful opera house began in 1964, but the building itself was not inaugurated until 1993.  It is built on the foundation of the Teatro Civico, which was destroyed during World War II.  Today it encompasses 5,000 square meters, seats 1,650 people, and has a bookshop, a bar and exhibitions. By working with innovative composers the Teatro Lirico has gained an international reputation as one of the best opera houses in the world and in 2001 received the Franco Abbiati Prize.

The focus is on opera and ballet, although a few modern concerts are performed there over the course of the year, so check out their events schedule.
