Tourist Guide Agrigento:

The town of Agrigento is located on the southern coast of the island of Sicily, Italy. It is famous as  being the site of the ancient Greek city of Akragas, founded around 580 BC.

Throughout its long history, the city has also been part of the empires of  the Romans, Byzantines, Saracens and Normans.

Due to the extraordinary wealth of its archaeological remains, Agrigento is a major tourist centre.  It is also the regional agricultural market centre and has important sulphur and phosphorous mining industries.

The current population is estimated at just under 60,000.
