An art museum, the Bellomo Regional Museum is located in the heart of Ortigia in Palazzo Bellomo. It houses many works of medieval and modern art which includes the popular paintings by Caravaggio and are entitled “Sepplellimento di Santa Lucia”. This museum is actually in a building which dates back to the Swabian period and which was transformed and also enlarged in the 15th century by the Bellomo family, who were considered to be the most powerful in Syracuse.
