Siena is a town in Tuscany in the western part of Italy. This hillside town of approximately 54,500 inhabitants is nestled amidst the famed wine region of Tuscany. Siena is made up of several valleys covered with gardens, vineyards and olive trees.
Siena enjoys a sub-Mediterranean type of climate. The rainfall is restricted to spring and autumn. Summers are primarily dry with the average temperature at 23.3°C. Winters are chilly; January is the coldest month with the average temperature under 5°C.
Siena was a flourishing trading town during the Middle Ages. The merchants of the town played a major role in beautifying the city with grand buildings. But, Siena did not develop into a modern commercial city. It still retains much of the medieval flavour and old time charm.
