The Uffizi Gallery, Florence, has an incomparable collection of artworks. The construction of the ‘Uffizi’, as it was then called, began in 1560; Cosimo I Medici was the person behind the vision. The building was designed by Giorgio Vasari and is in the shape of a horseshoe. The frescoes on the ceiling are admirable and the Vasario Corridor is beautifully decorated with sculptures and paintings. The grandeur of the building makes it a popular tourist attraction.
This museum has an exceptional collection of works by artists like Piero Della Francesca, Botticelli, Leonardo, Rafael and Baccus. It houses sculptures, furniture, antiques and a rare collection of miniatures (1392 pieces) that date back to as early as the thirteenth century. Recently, a new museum has been inaugurated in the building which is dedicated to works on ‘ still life’. Web Site: http://www.polomuseale.firenze.english
