Pienza: Attractions and more...
The centre of the village is shaped like a trapezium with each side marked by a grand structure. The Duomo, the cathedral, is one of the most dominating structures and is especially noted for its huge stained glass windows. The Palazzo Piccolomini was the residence of the Pope and some of his apartments are open to the public; it is also surrounded by well-planned gardens. The Palazzo Borgia used to serve as a residence for visiting bishops; today, it is a museum displaying local wares and articles of religious value. The Palazzo Publico, the town hall, stands on the fourth side.
Pieve di Corsignano is a smaller church in the vicinity and is an important site as the Pope was baptised here. There are some other palaces and churches in other parts of the town.
Pienza is also an ideal base to explore the surrounding region of Tuscany. The picturesque medieval towns of Montalcino and Montepulciaono are in the vicinity.
