In the middle of Tuscany, the city of Siena has maintained its medieval characteristic, as back in those days the city is divided in seventeen "contrade" meaning areas, each with its own symbol.
Since the medieval times each contrada had its notable family, jealous of the notable family of the other contrada. In a miniature of what happened with Italian cities, every notable of the Siena contrade spent his wealth for his palace and his area. Every contrada has a unique feel to it, if you pay attention you can notice on the walls and the buildings the different signs and symbols that once characterize the city.
The most famous and most central contrade are the Goose and the Eagle. Be careful of joining a discussion, the spirit is still alive these days!
