The Basilica of San Marco is one of the most famous cathedrals in Venice, Italy. One of the best known examples of Byzantine architecture, the basilica has been the symbol of wealth and power since the eleventh century. It was rebuilt in 978 AD and consecrated in 1094. The monument is magnificent in its façade as well as interiors.
The interiors of the basilica are breathtaking with a mixture of Byzantine and Gothic styles. Mosaics in gold and bronze cover the floors along with a variety of marbles and glass. The most renowned piece of art is the spectacular altarpiece called the Pala d’Oro, which is a masterpiece encrusted with over two thousand precious gems.
