Overview to visit Vilnius at its best
In the capital, ideal departure point to explore the country, is to be admired and appreciated an old baroque town.
Since the 16th century this capital city has always been and still is an important commercial, business and cultural centre not only for the country itself, but for both eastern and western Europe, too: its university dates back to 1579!
Everything in Vilnius, museums, houses, blocks, churches, squares, streets, mirrors its ancient splendour!
As a place of culture Vilnius has really a lot to offer. Its museums, some of which housed in former noble residences, exhibit not only national art, but works from other countries, too!
Some cultural organizations offer the opportunity to admire local art and enjoy
some good music.
Among the most attractive museums cannot be missed:
- The Lithuanian Museum of the Genocide Victims in which are displayed guns,
torture tools and victims of soviet era!
- Alexander Pushkin Literature Museum, displaying the spreading of Pushkin's
works in Lithuania, as well as the friendship between Pushkin and Mickiewicz.
- Mickevicius Memorial Museum reproducing the original setting and atmosphere
in which V. K. Mickevicius, scholar of literature lived with his family since
1940: personal objects, phots and documents of the writer during his life time.
- The Artillery Bastion witnesses the city’s defence system and its exciting
past history.
Cultural life is and still lives here: enter the Vilnius Opera and the Ballet
Theatre and listen to some excellent classical music, not to forget the typical
organ concerts held in many churches!
Those interested in Modern Art will find the Old Town exciting: here art galleries
display both classic and avant – garde paintings and sculptures, as well
as local artistic works.
