Valletta has a low violent crime rate. However theft of unattended personal belongings may take place. Tourists are strongly advised to protect their valuables and be aware that purse snatchers and pickpockets in the city.

Caution is chiefly recommended around the Paceville nightclub area, where excessive drinking and poor crowd control have given rise to violent and unruly behaviour. It is important for the tourist to follow the country’s rules and regulation.

Violation of laws, even unknowingly, may lead to arrest, expulsion or imprisonment. Penalties for possession of illegal drugs are severe and offenders may have to pay heavy fines or receive jail sentences.

In Malta they drive on the life side of the road, so, visitors are required to be attentive to traffic flow and regulations. Moreover, drivers may be undisciplined or erratic. The roads are narrow and congested, so minor traffic accidents can be frequent.
