Groningen: Attractions and more...
Grote Markt is the main square of the city. The Town Hall and the Gold Office, which used to serve as a tax office but has since been converted into a restaurant, are found here. The main attraction on this square is St. Martin’s Church. The tower of the church is known as the ‘old grey man’ and a climb to the top gives a panoramic view of the city.
Menkemaborg is an old manor surrounded by two moats. The furnishings, paintings and other artefacts displayed in the house portray the life led by the rich; the kitchens and the servant have also been preserved in its authenticity. The 1939–1945 Museum in this house displays the arms, ammunition and vehicles used during the war.
Take a pleasant boat ride for a tour of the city through its canals or opt for canoeing or water bikes. The Patersworldsemeer and the Zuidlaardermeer are two lakes in the vicinity, both of which are very popular with water sports enthusiasts.
