Amersfoort is located in the centre of Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. This town of approximately 139,000 inhabitants is a picturesque town retaining much of its original medieval flavour.
Amersfoort is surrounded by marshy lands; it lies in the Valley of Gelderland which is extensively devoted to farming.
Amersfoort like most of Netherlands experiences pretty drastic changes in the seasonal temperatures. July and August are the warmest months with the average temperature at 22°C. Rainfall is spread across the year.
This region has been the site of a very old settlement and was very well fortified in its early history. During the medieval period, it had a flourishing textile industry and later, a tobacco industry.
