Named after a 17th-century native Dutch painter, the Albert Cuyp Market (Albert Cuypmarkt) is conveniently located between Ferdinand Bolstraat and Van Woustraat in Amsterdam’s Oud-Zuid district. With over 300 stalls, the Albert Cuyp Market is known as the cheapest place in town to buy fresh produce as well as find great deals on clothes.
The market began as an unofficial congregation of street traders with carts. But in 1905 the city set it up at a marketplace because it became so popularly hectic. Today you can find a wide variety of food and other goods there, including fruits, vegetables, cheese, fish, spices and merchandise from other countries. It is also possible to find unique commodities like bedding and cosmetics at the Albert Cuyp Market. Many of the things sold there are targeted at Amsterdam’s residents of Turkish and Moroccan ethnicities, so the market has a very worldly feel.
Highlights include Amsterdam’s famous Stroopwafels, as well as a surplus of fantastic foreign restaurants located behind the vendor tents, offering distinctive and delicious ethnic food at bargain prices. The Albert Cuyp Market operates Monday through Friday, and is open from 9:30 am to 5 pm. As its success is largely dependent on favorable weather conditions, it sometimes closes early during winter.
