Nestled in Amsterdam’s Chinatown, right next to Red Light District, the Nieuwmarkt (New Market) Square is always a beehive of activity. With over 20 restaurants and coffeeshops, the square is never short of the Netherlands’ locals or tourists. As the name suggests, Nieuwmarkt Sqare is indeed a well-known hot spot for street markets and is a must-see attraction.
During the warm months, it hosts a daily market, with its organic food vendor day being Saturday. On Sunday, it offers popular book and antique markets (which bring a flood of people into the square). The locals also know the Nieuwmarkt as the place to go for entertainment, as it holds free film nights once a month during summer, as well as Circus Rigolo during the month of August.
The square also has been a site of many historical events. In World War II it was used as a place to round up Jews for the concentration camps. Nieuwmarkt Square’s foremost structure is called De Waag, a building that was once a medieval gate that was then converted into a weighing house. In the past De Waag has also been used by the surgeons’ guild to perform public human autopsies!
