Noordermarkt (“Boerenmarkt op de Noordermarkt” to the locals) is Amsterdam’s “biological fresh food market,” or to put it more simply, the city’s farmers' market. The market is open on Saturdays, from 9 am to 3 pm, and offers healthy and organic fruits, vegetables, and other perishable foods that are meant to be eaten or cooked shortly after purchase. It is still a fantastic place to learn about the unique food and culture of the Netherlands.
Since its inception in 1987, Noordermarkt has grown significantly in popularity. In fact, it attracts such a big crowd every week that large groups of locals from all the districts in Amsterdam come to shop and socialize. At Noordermarkt, it is fairly common to spot distinctive produce such as organic cheese, eggs, bread, honey, herbs, spices, nuts, fresh fish, and homemade pastries.
The vibe of the market is quaint, but extraordinarily fun, as the atmosphere offers a relaxation that can only be found in Amsterdam. However, it is important to note that pickpockets often lurk in markets such as the Noordermarkt, so keep a close eye on your personal belongings.
