Amsterdam’s Waterlooplein Flea Market is one of the oldest and most traditional of the flea markets in the Netherlands. It is also said to be the most interesting in town, as its big outdoor bazaar feel regularly attracts locals and tourists alike.

This market offers everything from army uniforms and second hand clothes to African trinkets and old electronics.  Located behind City Hall at the junction of the Leprozengracht and Houtgracht canals, the Waterlooplein Flea Market has 300 regular vendors, and is uniquely rich in history.

Having started in 1880, the market’s location was originally home to the biggest Jewish market in Amsterdam.  However, it was eventually shut down by the holocaust of World War II.  After the war, the market started up again as a general flea market, and soon became a common ground for the hippie culture of the 60’s and 70’s.

The Waterlooplein Flea Market is a popular destination for tourists, so be sure to expect a large crowd of folks sifting through junk and treasure, looking for that special Dutch keepsake. The market is open Monday through Friday 9 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.  Remember that it is a tightly packed square, so be sure to also watch out for pickpockets.
