One very popular dish served by Amsterdam street vendors is raw herring, prepared in many different ways and served in a variety of fashions. All over town these herring stalls can be seen, the more well-known of which are Stubbe’s Haring, Henk’s Haring, and DE ZEEVANG. There are many options for how the fish is served, a local favorite being the delectable herring sandwich with diced onions and sweet pickles.
Other sterling street foods include broodjes with a cup of hot soup (also served all over town), falafels, and, of course, pancakes and waffles topped with any number of chocolate sauces, nuts, jams and creams. The restaurant called Pancakes! offers some offbeat flapjack options such as ham or chicken curry pancakes.
Another very common snack that is authentic to Amsterdam is a mound of deep fried, crispy French fries stuffed into a cone and covered with thick mayonnaise. The cuisine is known to the Dutch as Vlaamse frites (Flemish fries), and the most-frequented of these stands are Vleminckx Sausmeesters, located on Voetboogstraat, and Manneken Pis, located on Damrak. As the tourists are eager to try them and the locals definitely love them, these places will always have lines stretching down the street.
