With its translation meaning “Indian City”, Indische Buurt is located in East Amsterdam, and is rich with history and culture, as its streets are named after islands and landmarks of the former Dutch East Indies colony.  The area is currently undergoing a large redevelopment, as most of its formerly squatted buildings are being extensively renovated and placed back on the Dutch housing market.

The neighborhood is enclosed by the railroad Amsterdam-Hilversum to the west, and Flevopark to the east, a historic park that also offers outdoor swimming pools.   A bit farther east is a Jewish cemetery that has been around since 1714 and honours the memory of approximately 200,000 people. GVB tram lines 3, 7, and 14 end in Indische Buurt, and there are also several bus lines that run through the area.  To the north is Zeeburgerdijk, and to the south is Ringvaart Watergraafsmeer.

The construction of Indische Buurt was a result of Amsterdam’s economic expansion that followed the implementation of the North Sea Canal in 1876. The district became a solely residential area after the 1960’s; when the city’s western port was relocated.  As the housing market is growing rapidly in this area, Indische Buurt is a great place to check out if you are thinking of moving to Amsterdam!
