Amsterdam’s Zeeburg district is perhaps the most rapidly growing borough of any major city in Holland. Zeeburg was named after the Zeeburgerdijk, the natural bank that separates the district from the North Sea of the Netherlands.

Since the 19th-century, Zeeburg has been continuously integrating itself into the city’s metropolitan area. With roughly 53,000 residents, Zeeburg is home to three different neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and great things to offer.

The Eastern Docklands (Oostelijk Havengebied) is an area associated with the upper-class of Zeeburg, as its housing and location tend to attract young families with relatively high incomes. The IJburg is known as the middle-class area and is made up of six different man-made islands on Amsterdam’s IJ Lake.  Indische Buurt (Indian City) is the more working-class area of Zeeburg, a spot that is also undergoing rapid development and becoming competitive in Holland’s housing market.

One piece of interesting trivia about the area: The 1928 summer Olympics held a portion of its pentathlon event at Zeeburg’s shooting range. The district also has an extremely popular campground that travelers flock to from all over the world. This is a great excursion for activities like cycling, skating, and kayaking. Also, if you’re looking to move to Amsterdam, Zeeburg is a great place to start looking.
