The city has several ATMs that remain open 24 hours a day. Foreign Cirrus bank cards can be used to withdraw money from the many ATMs. Cash withdrawals with credit card can also made.
Even if traveller’s cheques are used as an alternative to a credit card it is still it is advisable to carry sufficient cash to cover expenses for the first few days.
Many tourists visit the city in summer, however, spring is also a pleasant time to visit. Rain can occur throughout the year, while winter can be quite cold. The month of April is best for daffodils as they are in full bloom at that time.
The national language is Dutch while English is commonly spoken. Many locals also speak French and German. The city has strict rules about health and safety.
The legal age to buy wine and beer is 16, however, one must be over 18 to buy spirits.
Cashiers, off licences and bartenders may ask for proof of age from young people and they may refuse to sell alcohol if it is not given.
