Breda Castle
Breda Castle, better known as Kasteel van Breda amongst the locals; went on to appear in records in twelfth century. During the fourteenth century, Polanen’s Jan I constructed a novel castle; with 4 ‘corner towers’ and a ‘chapel’. Both of them got pulled down, reconstructed a number of times. The ‘present-day’ castle, i.e. ancestral home relating to ‘Counts of Orange-Nassau’; was built in the year 1530 by none other than Count Henry III, i.e. tutor/counselor to Charles V, the Emperor. It got extended later by King William III. Bologna’s Tommaso Vincitore was commissioned by Henry to have converted fortified old castle in to a good-looking contemporary palace. Moreover, he (Henry) stayed in an ancient water-mill during this period which stood upon the site thereafter. This palace became ‘Royal Military Academy’ after a few years.
