Tourist Guide Heerlen
Heerlen is a small town (its population is a little bit more than 90,000) placed in the south-east of Netherlands, under the province of Limburg. Its origins date back a very long time ago : Heerlen, in fact, was founded by the Romans, and of that period and dominant style it still mantains some evidence through the many attractions and places to visit of the city.
However, Heerlen, has known its period of major development and growth during 19th century : the town, in fact, became one of the most important centres for the coal mining industry of the whole Netherlands. So, Heerlen moved from a rural and agriculture-based agglomerate to become a very important centre of industrialization.
Then, during the 20th century, Heerlen turned conclusively into the dynamic and active town as we know it today ; thanks to the architect Frits Peutz, Heerlen acquired a remarkable and interesting design into the shapes of its buildings and palaces, roads, squares and streets.
